Road ministry asks states to make licensing of e-rickshaws easier

The fact that government is indeed keen to boost the electric rickshaw sector became evident once again. The road transport ministry is in the process of issuing notifications which asks states to remove any legal hurdles which may exist in the running of electric rickshaws. Many experts are considering this step, as a last minute connectivity solution. The central ministry will also ask the state governments to make the registration and licensing process easier and smoother for e-rickshaws. At present there are over 4 million electric rickshaws in the country. With the initiative being taken by the central government this number is likely to increase many times shortly.

The planning of the central government for the e-rickshaw segment

The ministry of road is already working on the legal aspects in regard to the notifications which are to be sent. The ministry has already set guidelines for the operation of the electric rickshaws in the country. They have been allowed to operate under the Motor Vehicles Act. The basic guidelines which have been set pertain to the maximum speed limit, carrying capacity and body specifications. The road ministry is also coming up with safety guidelines which would have to be followed by the operators of the e-rickshaws. The department is also encouraging the state governments to impart training to e-rickshaw drivers and operators. A senior official in the ministry is of the opinion that the e-rickshaw segment has the potential to generate mass employment. So the ministry would like to have a structured growth in the same. Thus steps are being taken accordingly to boost the sector.

At present the central government has a plan of getting around 6 million electric vehicles on the road in the country. The plan is in line with the government’s objective to provide more electric mobility to the nation. We had already in one of our earlier blogs informed you that cab aggregator “Ola” has launched e-rickshaw in Delhi and the entire NCR region. The government is also planning to invite Chinese electric rickshaw makers to set up joint ventures in India.

The need for government approved electric rickshaws has become essential

Experts are of the opinion that with so many initiatives being taken by the government, the e-rickshaw segment is pegged for a growth of 20% in the coming years. However with so much growth expected the sector is also getting much more organized. The need for government approved e-rickshaws has become very important. As already mentioned earlier, the roads ministry is also coming up with safety norms for these battery operated vehicles. At present generally electric rickshaw weighs around 300 Kgs. They usually have a load capacity of around 700 Kgs.

So in case you are planning to venture into the sector it may be the ideal time to do so.
