Regulations are necessary to make them safe as a mode of transport
In some cities, some Electric rickshaw carry 6-8 passengers. However they are generally designed to carry only 4 passengers at the most. Keeping in view the safety of the passengers this practice needs to be stopped. Thus to ensure that the electric rickshaw drivers do not do this, regulations need to be in place. Heavy fines need to be imposed in case the drivers are found to flout the rules.
The braking equipment of these vehicles needs to be checked as well from time to time to prevent accidents from happening. With the proper functioning of the brakes better safety of the passengers would be ensured.
Another issue regarding electric rickshaws is the recharging of the batteries of these vehicles. For the sector to flourish, the number of recharging stations of the batteries of the e rickshaws is very low. Thus there is a strong need for the infrastructure in terms of recharging stations. The government in working on this front, but there is still a long way to go.
Apart from these the need for regulating the fares charged by the drivers is an immediate necessity. There is also a tendency of drivers of the E rickshaws to use substandard spare parts for their vehicles to cut down on costs. However there are great risks involved with this. This becomes a serious concern especially when important parts like brake equipment, tires, turning radius, etc are compromised with.
