Electric rickshaws have been becoming more popular in some cities since 2008 as an alternative to auto rickshaws run by fuel and manual rickshaws because of their efficiency, low fuel cost, Eco-friendly nature and less human effort compared to pulled rickshaws and auto rickshaws. Electric rickshaws are widely accepted as an alternative to petrol/diesel/CNG auto rickshaws. Mostly manufactured in India and China, experts suggest that battery-run rickshaws could help low-income people by facilitating them with better transport if it is introduced in a systematic manner.

In 1837, Robert Davidson of Scotland was the builder of the first electric car, but it was until 1890s that electric cars were manufactured and sold in Europe and America.

Electric rickshaws are most popular in Asia. They are mostly used in China, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. While China, Japan, India, and few European countries like Switzerland, France, and Germany have been doing their research and also helped to develop electric tricycles for commercial transport. They are also attempting to capture the growing market in Asia.

One of the first attempt to design electric-rickshaws in India was done by Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute in late 1990s. They modified the basic cycle rickshaw and then converted it to an electric one. Popularly known as e-rickshaws, they started to gain popularity in India since 2011. They have provided with service to every city and also contributes in providing livelihood to a large number of people in India. Because of their low cost and high efficiency they are widely accepted on the Indian streets.
