Electric Vehicle Nation by 2030- India

electric vehicle will take future market

The environmental concerns are rising globally. The pollution issue is a major concern in India too. India is the fourth largest consumer of energy in the world. Much of the energy requirements are met by crude oil and coal. However these traditional sources of energy contribute majorly to the alarming levels of pollution in most Indian cities. The pollution emitted by commercial vehicles which run on diesel and CNG are amongst the culprits to the problem. This is why both the Central Government and State Governments are now working out ways to boost alternative energy sources. The Electric Vehicle segment happens to be one of the thrust areas for growth as a result the Government is planning to make India a 100% Electric Vehicle nation by 2030.

Advent of Electric Vehicle industry in India

India has a huge automobile industry and also the sixth largest globally. This sector contributes about 22 % of the country’s total manufacturing output. In this sector the Electric Vehicle segment can play an important role. It is expected that it will help automobile sector‘s share of manufacturing in India’s GDP from the current 15% to 25% by 2022.

The rising emission levels of traditional fuel based vehicles are a serious concern. This has compelled policy makers and auto makers globally to shift towards Electric Vehicles (EVs). Thus many companies in India too are now venturing into this new segment. They are planning to expand their portfolio here. So there is a clear shift in strategies to focus on producing zero-emission vehicles.

The other reason for growing importance of EVs is the rising fuel prices. India is a big importer of crude oil. This accounts for a bulk of our import bill. With all these issues the Government too is stressing on the EV segment in India. They are working on initiatives to promote the fast growth of this sector. They formulated a scheme for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India. This came under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020. The main of this scheme is to encourage the progressive induction of reliable, affordable and efficient EVs.

Amidst such a supportive environment the future of EV segment in India is bright. However one major challenge in the segment is the lack of infrastructure for the segment. One major hurdle is the lack of electric recharging stations. But with all the steps being taken by the government this present challenge for the industry is likely to be overcome. Big Automobile Companies too are working on ways and means to EVs affordable and convenient for the common man.
